My new Defensive Stat:
I've been charting the Royals this year with a defensive stat I created. It's not Bill James worthy but it's kind of cool. How many runs does a fielder really cost or save a team? This is the question I want to answer in real runs not projections based on other numbers. I of course don't see every game so it is based on what I do wittness which is more than the average fan. The best way to score is at the ballpark, followed by TV and some radio. A few times I will score something off a newpaper account the next day, if I can see the ing played out play by play. A recent example is Emil Brown was clearly identified in 4/28 game as playing 2 balls poorly in to doubles that accounted for a 4 run Oakland ing. I could see the play by play and determine exactly how many runs Brown cost them.
Defensive Runs Created (need a better name)
A fielder is given a + point for every play that goes beyone an average effort and helps his team prevent a run (baserunner/advancement etc).
A fielder is given a + point for every run that is prevented from scoring due to this play by recreating the ing (some projection needed)
A fielder is given a + point any time his exceptional play ends an ing
A fielder is given a - point any time he fails to execute average expectations of a defensive player
A fielder is given a - point for every run his defensive failure leads to
I'd say that there are 3-5 avg. plays per game per team that fall into these categories. Obviously any error qualifies, as well as poor range plays and great range plays, hustle plays and lack there of can factor in, thinking errors such as throwing to wrong base. I track all of these and chart them as a total number. Some positions prove to be more critical than others due to the amount of plays they are involved in. SS 2b 3b CF. I've also noticed that a particuarly good or bad fielder become more prominant and noticable. Doug Mienkiewicz swallows a lot of bad throws that stand out. In past years I may not have noticed plays Matt Stairs didn't save that would have gone down as reflecting badly on others via errors on Teahan and Berroa etc. Reggie Sanders has yet to register a particuarly good or bad play all month. He simply appears to make the plays he should. Emil Brown is an almost daily event in the other corner partly because his play stands out so visiably. Even his good plays ( covering lots of ground and making a catch in front of the wall) may actually be ordinary for another fielder so I try to maintain a high standard for what makes a good or bad defensive play. It's clearly a judgment stat but a judgment that 90% of knowledgable baseball fans watching would usually agree on. What is key is not just the initial fielding error or misplay but how many runs directly scored or did not score off it. That is the interesting part as it measures the real effect of a particular play. Here are some game examples:
4/3/06 at the park M Grudzielanek diving stab of a line drive over 2nd +1, Mienkiewicz great stretch on bad throw +1, Angel Berroa jogged on a slow gb up the middle -1 ( here's a judgment call but clearly an issue I've seen with Berroa at times. He does not always put full effort into all plays but at other times will flat out dive for a ball- several fans in my section mentioned the same sentiment), M Teahan -bad throw -1. None of these plays lead to a run or likely prevented a run so they were only rated a 1.
4/7 at the park Angel Berroa missed the tag on a sb when throw beat the runner, run scored due to this play -2, E Brown ran into Dejesus in CF on a routine fly causing it to be missed, lead to 1 run scoring and -2 score, M Grudzielanek bobbled throw on sure DP costing the 2nd out -1, Angel Berroa great stop to start a DP +1 (note not all DP are considered exceptional- many are routine and not scored-this 1 was special, Mienkiewicz saved another bad Teahan throw with a scoop +1. Mark Teahan great hustle on a bloop single that fell in no mans land, he made a full slide to retrieve the ball and prevent a 2nd base +1
4/10 TV Paul Bako started a DP on a pickoff at 2nd +2, E Brown again ran into Dejesus on routine fly ball costing a run -2, (note neither of these plays by Brown showed up in the boxscore as an error). Mienkiewicz 3 base error on a grounder with bases loaded -4 1 for error and 3 for the runs allowed. Minky is a great fielder but this is exactly the kind of play I want to chart. He made a doozy of an error here and in reality he cost the Royals 4 runs.
4/17 TV Mark Teahan bad throw on routine grounder cost 1 run -2, Mark Teahan turns a bunt into DP +1
4/18 TV Mienkiewicz great sliding catch on foul +1, Berroa error on routine gb with 2 outs - lead to 3 run ing and a Royal loss -4, John Buck dropped the ball on sb attempt -1 ( I may not charge Buck for just a sb if I felt like he had no shot but here he dropped the ball).
4.25 TV Mienkiewicz great stop saves a run+2, Shane Costa sliding catch +1, Elarton pickoff +1, E Brown terrible throw home into the ground on a shallow hit -2
4/30 Mienkiewicz great diving stop to initiate a 3-6-1 DP +3 saved a potential big ing, caught a foul by diving into the tarp +1, E Brown shows good range running catch into the wall +1, A Sisco doesn't cover 1rst after Minky made a great stop and it could of ended the ing lead to a run -2, E German flyball hits him in the head with 2 outs and 2 on 3base error - 3 (1 run not charged as it would have scored as a SF if he caught it). On 4/19 German got a -4 for a similar play.
As you can see it's far easier to track runs that do score as oppossed to runs that might have scored. So a minus rating over all may be common- we shall see as season goes on.
April Royals scores
P Bako +2
J Buck -1
A Berroa -7
E German -7 in OF -2 infield
T Graffanino -5 at 1b (1 play)
Gruds +1
Minky +3
Stairs no plays
Teahan -3 I think his shoulder is hurting, really struggling with throws
E Brown -10 he cost us 10 runs in 1 month- how many did he drive in?
S Costa +1
DDejesus 0 am aware of some positive plays when he was healthy but could not record them per my criteria
Reggie Sanders- 0 steady steady steady 0 is a good number
Sweeney 0 no plays
Pitchers Elarton +1 Sisco -2
as a team -26 we have a defensive rating of negative 26 in 1month an average of 1 bad play more than a good play per game

1970 Royals Replay
| 4/30 Det Home- Royals break the streak with a weird lineup that comes through-Fiore-Adair-Hawk Taylor and Jackie Hernandez the offense-Butler goes 7 strong- Hernandez go ahead run in 7th on a squeeze-Tigers went for play at home and Schaal slipped by after a phit triple. Rooker solid in 8th and 1rst out of 9th-Moe D in for 2 out save gets 1 then Horton rolls that 6-4 solid goner. Johnson keeps Royals in it and finally the bottom of order delivers again with Spanky base hit the winner scoring Fiore after a big 1b ** by the weak hitting Adair |

Bill Butler pitched 7 strong innings at Municipal Stadium where the Kansas
City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers in 11 innings by the score of 4 to
3.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Kansas City came out on top in
the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Fiore stroked a single.
Jerry Adair next to the plate and he doubled. Ed Kirkpatrick then smacked a
single giving Kansas City the victory as -66 happy fans celebrated wildly.
Kansas City ended up with 10 hits for the game while Detroit had 5.
The victory was credited to Bob Johnson(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Bob Reed(0-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3
innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.
'Ahhh, how sweet it is,' Charlie Metro 19-35 sighed. 'That win feels like a
tall, cool drink of water after spending far too much time in the desert
lately.'

4/30/06 A Small Market Fan Held Hostage- Day 27
Oakland at KC. KC loses a rare win opp ahead 6-1 thru 3 and rain wipes it out-more importantly I lose a Reggie Sanders grand salamie in 2 leagues
Sunday family at the park- rain threatening wind-strong to RF and I tell the boy"Wind + Elarton usually bad- he better have control because wind + walks + Elarton = disaster. I tell him watch Oakland LH batters." After 3 Elarton is gone and Chavez and Swisher have gone deep set up by walks. I'm miserable in my HQ inspired savant knowledge of FB ratios and command but secretly releived I have Swisher on my KC Al league roster.
Issues I must raise with an uninspired franchise that refuses to get smart.
Lineup issues
1. Kerry Robinson called up and batting leadoff-I like the call up- ( could have been Guiel but what the heck we go speed over power)but Buddy Bell and the organization continue to play the game by the book- and their book is dated 1968 when a lead off hitter is "your fast guy" This is the Omar Moreno school of lead off hitters. This organization has no idea about on base -STILL! and the irony of the A's constantly bashing us with walks and homers. I think Robinson can have a role with this team but not leading off. Yes I know he had 3 hits blah blah blah but his on base is average generated and the concept off drawing walks especially when you are a Kerry Robinson type hitter is pretty important for a team like us. I like the concept of bookending speed guys ala Tampa Bay. Notice they put the weaker batter Gaithwright 9th- Crawford 1rst. E German has done nothing but play well offensively and is a better on base guy who also has speed-flip flop them. I realize Buddy and Allard don't have time to read but they might want to check out "3 Nights in August" some nice scouting on Kerry Robinson. A small quibble really but I'm sick of seeing this year in year out- Berroa leading off etc.
2. It's Sunday time to take out our good players.
This is my peave with virtually every ML manager. The Sunday day off for old guys. I don't object to the idea of resting players especially players vulnerable to fatigue and injury but can we be a little flexible and creative. Day game after a night game trance "Must sit Reggie Sanders"- ok cool Reggie is 37 and has a history of getting DL'd BUT he is our clean up hitter and pretty key guy especially when the Captain is hurting from moving away from a pitch sitting- and lets clarify Sanders didn't really play Saturday night did he. The game was rained out after 3 ings. His workout consisted of trotting around the bases after a grand slam and walking to 1rst on a walk. Could we stretch him this week? We batted Mienky clean up for God's sake. Reggies been slumping and the homer could have gotten him back on track let the man hit.or if we must sit him once a week can we counter what the rest of the league is doing and actually play our best guys on Sunday (Grundz/Buck also sat) and rest Sanders on Monday- hey pretty clever huh- The theme I am pushing here is the Royals are actually worse than other teams - thus we need to maximize the times we can get an edge like Sunday's- we play our top guys when everyone else sits theirs. Against the best we need to play our best- like Mike Sweeney in NY - but that's another beef- Reggie resting after a rainout- makes no sense.3. Playing infielders in the outfield:Esteban German in CF 3b error = 3 runs. Stadium booed him but I couldn't. I boo the manager for the repeated burning Buddy Bell gets from playing a 2b in the outfield. He needs to play but in the infield. It's not my problem Allard blew 2 mill on Graffanino and moved German out of a job. In my defensive +/- tally where fielders are rewarded and penalized for defensive plays that actually prevent or allow runs scored. German on 4/19 scored a -4 ( allowed 3 runs in plus the initial bad defensive play) Today with a 3base error he scored a -3. (fun fact it's 4/30 and the Royals have already had 3 3base errors) -7 is a scary number in 2 games. To further emphasize German's weakness he plays not LF but CF??? Bell actually maximizes German's weakness by putting him in the outfield position that involves the most action. Kerry Robinson and his weak arm in RF - could easily move to CF and Emil Brown in LF (the worst defensive outfielder in recent memory, -10 for the season) played RF all last year. It's a terrible defensive outfield but why not try and make it as painless as possible. This shows no skill at a key managerial componant- putting your players in their best position to do well.
BTW Sanders should have started in RF anyway right and because German is inexperienced in CF he took a ball off his head and had to leave the game forcing Bell to put in the guy he wanted to rest in the first place and the only thing missing was Sanders breaking his leg in the process- read the above line to keystone cops piano music for best effectThis game was over before the 1rst pitch.
Next Issue - bullpen management
1. In winnable games why pitch your worst pitchers over your best ones?
Point 1 - with rainout pen was rested everyone available.
Somehow the Royals fought back and took advantage of a bad Joe Blanton who had worse command than Elarton. Mark Teahan has a beautiful at bat with 2 on in the 5th and hits one dead center to tie the game- whoo hoo nice job - we have a great chance to win the game. Top of 6th Buddy goes to the pen in a tie game and chooses his worst pitcher. Why? Doesn't common sense say use your best arms in close games to maximize your chance to win. There's that phrase again "Maximize your chances to win" when given the opportunity. Hudson clearly has been the least effective reliever- no debate. Anyone was a better choice than him but why not Elmer Dessens- our most effective reliever outside our closer Burgos- why not? Well, the book says he's the set up guy Mr. 8th ing- can't use him until the 8th then your closer in the 9th- that's the way your typical bad donkey MLB manager does it.
Follow the bouncing insanity now.Hudson walks the 1rst guy (you know exactly where this is going when this happens)and fails to record an out on any of the 4 batters he faces and gives up a bases loaded HBP while ahead 0-2.
This is not a 1 time occurance. The 4/25 game vs Minnesota was virtually the exact same situation and he got shelled w/o getting an out. That was 5 days ago.
6-5 A's bases loaded 0 out and Buddy brings in Andy Sisco. There were lefty hitters coming up and Sisco hasn't been AS terrible last few outings but his main vulnerability is command and wildness. Bases loaded -0 outs is this the best spot for him? Does this put Sisco in the best scenario to fit his skills? No of course not-
It was 12-5 by the end of the ing. Wait it gets better... stay with me the punch line is coming.
8th ing- down 7 and Buddy goes to Elmer Dessens-
9th ing down 6 we go to our closer A Burgos.
Only in the bizarro world of the KC Royals by the book think tank do we use our worst pitchers in a tie and 1 run game our best pitchers down 7 late. It's madness and incompetance. The Royals are in a game at all maybe 3 days a week and there are plenty of opportunities to rest our best pitchers and use the other guys in less than likely wins- it's just mind boggling how a team has not a single person with a creative idea to make them better and how to maximize what they have.
If you have read this far you are in worse shape than I am and I thank you for listening. Send help- Mark Cuban please buy us and let us stay in KC

Joe Niekro had a strong outing as the Detroit Tigers defeated the ice-cold
Kansas City Royals by the score of 2 to 1 at Municipal Stadium.
Detroit came up with 1 run in the 7th inning. Kansas City could do no damage
in the bottom of the 9th. Niekro(1-2) went 8 innings allowing 1 run for the
win. Tom Timmerman earned his 3rd save. Wally Bunker(2-2) was tagged with
the loss.
With this win, Detroit has a 8-8 record. They have been 6-4 lately. Kansas
City can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a
miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.
